The Greatest Showman has made its much anticipated debut as a brand-new musical at the Bristol Hippodrome. Based on the hugely successful film, the stage production required a wide range of theatrical elements to capture the spectacle and energy audiences know and love.

Luminous was proud to support the production with a series of custom special effects designed to enhance key moments throughout the show.

The Brief

Disney Theatrical Group (DTG) tasked Luminous to create a realistic fire effect for a pivotal scene in which the main character’s theatre is destroyed by an unruly mob. The sequence demanded a visually dramatic solution to mirror the film’s visuals, with flames integrated in and amongst moving scenery, roaming performers, balconies, revolving stages, show decks, and wheeled scenic props.

Luminous provided consultancy from the outset, carrying out a feasibility study and SFX Workshop at our facility. This allowed the creative team to explore alternatives to traditional fire, test prototypes, and determine the safest and most visually convincing approach. Following this, Luminous was selected as the technical supplier, translating the SFX Designer’s vision into a fully compliant, bespoke system that met the complex production brief and adhered to UK legislation.

The Challenge

The Greatest Showman

Luminous initially carried out feasibility tests with the aim to simulate the visual drama and energy of live fire without the hazards associated with open flame. This required research and development to evaluate steam, mist, smoke, and silk-based fire simulations. Each solution had to integrate seamlessly with choreography, staging, and cues while maintaining maximum safety and repeatability. Luminous created both a real and fake fire scene which were filmed for comparison so the creative team could explore both angles.

The production timeline was extremely tight after the creative direction was confirmed, with less than 6 weeks to go until installation. Luminous needed to build and deliver these custom flame effects systems within this timeline.

The Solution

Custom Flame Products:

  • 1 × “Molotov” Flame Jet
  • 3 × “Revolve” Multi-Stage Flame Jets
  • 5 × “Dragon” Flame Bars
  • 13 × “Handrail” Flame Bars
  • 3 × “Vertical” Flame Bars
  • 1 × Circus Flame Ring

Supporting Systems:

  • Gas Distribution Wall Panel
  • Gas Detection Alarm
  • Rack-mounted wireless switching interface
  • System Enable, E-Stop, and Hold-to-Run devices

The bespoke flame systems brought the climactic fire scene to life, creating the drama and tension of a theatre burning on stage. With multiple levels, revolving stages, balconies, and wheeled scenic props, this sequence was a complex setup and integration. Along with the additional smoke machines, wind machines and low fog we provided, each effect was carefully positioned and timed to work seamlessly with the choreography and scenic elements, delivering an bold performance while ensuring complete safety for cast, crew, and audience.

Luminous also supplied a Circus Flame Ring, allowing a performer to safely jump through a controlled ring of fire. Carefully integrated with the choreography and timing of the scene, it created a memorable moment while meeting all safety and technical requirements.

To manage the complexity of the setup safely, all flame effects were fed through a central Gas Distribution Wall Panel. This system allowed precise control of gas delivery to each effect, with integrated gas detection, emergency stops, and wireless switching interfaces. By centralising control, the production team could operate multiple flame effects across the stage reliably, while maintaining full safety compliance and quick response in case of any issue.

Gas & Consumables

As part of our Gas Management service, Luminous supplied and managed all consumables required for the special effects, ensuring the production could run safely and smoothly. This included:

  • Vapour cylinders for haze machines
  • Liquid cylinders for low fog
  • Propane for gas flame systems

By managing all consumables, we ensured the technical team could focus on the performance while maintaining compliance with safety standards and providing consistent, repeatable effects throughout the run.
