Luminous were delighted to support the West End production of Beetlejuice. Following its success on Broadway, the show opened at the Prince Edward Theatre and is set to run until April 2027.

Based on the iconic film Beetlejuice by Tim Burton, this darkly comedic musical follows a recently deceased couple trying to haunt their home’s new occupants, a teenager grappling with loss, and the chaos unleashed by the unpredictable Betelgeuse.

The Brief

Beetlejuice is a well-established production, having already run on Broadway and toured North America. The original show designer, Jeremy Chernick of J&M Special Effects, approached Luminous to help realise his designs for the West End production.

Working as a trusted partner, Luminous took the original Broadway concepts and adapted them for the UK. This included refining certain special effects solutions and ensuring full compliance with the UK’s more stringent safety regulations.

The Challenge

One of the primary challenges was integrating special effects equipment seamlessly into the scenic elements. This went beyond simply fitting equipment into set pieces.

Each effect required careful consideration of power distribution, control systems, and data infrastructure, all while preserving the visual integrity of the set. Luminous also needed to coordinate with other embedded technologies, including automated scenic elements, to ensure everything worked together reliably and safely.

The Solution

For Beetlejuice, Luminous delivered a wide range of integrated special effects, all discreetly built into the scenery. These included pyrotechnic sparks, streamers, confetti effects, and handheld devices used by performers.

To enhance the chaotic and supernatural tone of the show, we also supplied a variety of atmospheric effects. These ranged from smoking chimneys and a simulated flame fireplace to ‘Neitherworld’ portals that emit fog and light as they appear on stage.

All systems were designed to function within moving scenery, whether flown or tracked on and off stage. Depending on the application, units were powered by onboard batteries and controlled via DMX or dedicated wireless pyro systems.

Some of the smaller devices were even integrated into costumes, with concealed ducting allowing performers to safely trigger effects themselves during the show.

Consumables

As part of our consumables service, Luminous supplied and managed all necessary materials required to maintain the special effects throughout the run.

We implemented a streamlined 4-weekly supply schedule, ensuring consistent availability while keeping logistics simple for the theatre’s technical team. This included:
