LUMINOUS were asked to design, manufacture and install various special effects for the UK tour of Beauty and the Beast. These had to be integrated seamlessly into props. LUMINOUS worked closely with the special effects designer, Jeremy Chernick, to achieve his vision for the SFX elements. To ensure we met all the technical requirements and achieved seamless integration, we also worked alongside the Technical Director for Disney Theatrical, David Churchill.
Along with some enchanting special effects, we provided the show with our gas and fuel management service. We regularly coordinated all deliveries and collections of their bottled gases, liquid CO₂ and SFX consumables, such as:
The special effects package consisted of:
Glitter Burst
LUMINOUS were tasked to produce a fully custom air-powered confetti effect. This was to be built into the stage floor within a tight void. The team used a fishtail nozzle coupled with a venturi and supply tank to create an instant burst of glitter.
Champagne Bottles
Part of the musical called for large champagne bottles to pop. These scenic props were built on two rolling trucks that were winched onstage during the performance. On cue, they would all ‘erupt’ with a plume of CO₂ to represent the popping of the bottles. They were self-contained with low voltage CO₂ jets, completed with a wireless control system and gas onboard.
Handlesticks
One important character needed help to bring his costume to life. Lumiere, a living candelabra, required live flames to come out of his hands. LUMINOUS developed a new version of a handheld, gas-powered fire torch. With custom candlestick mouldings, the ‘Handlesticks’ were born! Find out more about this effect here.
