The Brief
Disney’s Hercules has arrived in the West End, debuting at the iconic Theatre Royal Drury Lane! Inspired by the 1997 animated film and rooted in ancient mythology, this spectacular new musical demanded an equally powerful technical delivery.
LUMINOUS was tasked with designing, building and installing a complete special effects package for the theatre show. These elements needed to seamlessly integrate into the production’s set design and withstand the rigours of the show’s residency.
The Outcome
We delivered a collection of bespoke special effects solutions, all engineered for reliability, repeatability and creative impact.
- Custom smoke screen effects integrated into staging
- Mini fog and fan assemblies mounted on flown scenery
- Low fog systems with automated pop-ups and diverters
- Air vacuums and ducts concealed within stage lifts
- Pneumatic storage and delivery systems
- Streamers and confetti effects
In addition, we designed and installed a hard pipe system at Theatre Royal Drury Lane to safely deliver liquid CO₂ to the machines located in the substage. This permanent installation was carefully commissioned to meet the highest safety and performance standards.
Throughout technical rehearsals, our team worked responsively – adapting to evolving creative requirements. LUMINOUS provided technical consultation and solutions at every stage to meet the ever-changing brief.
LUMINOUS continues to provide ongoing technical support and Gas and Fuel Management service throughout the show’s run. This includes scheduled refills of CO₂ dewars and gas cylinders, as well as the supply of SFX consumables to keep streamers and confetti effects running smoothly, show after show.
