The 50th anniversary revival of Teeth ‘n’ Smiles has arrived in the West End, bringing the cult classic back to the stage for a new generation of audiences. The play follows a struggling rock band performing at Jesus College, Cambridge.

Luminous was pleased to support the production by providing a range of special effects equipment, helping to create the high-energy atmosphere of a live music performance.

The Brief

As part of the anniversary revival, the creative team wanted to capture the rebellious spirit at the heart of the play. Our role was to help bring a key scene to life, where the band performs on stage and, as things begin to unravel, the scenery catches fire and fills with smoke.

The production required a series of atmospheric effects to recreate the intensity of a live gig environment and fully immerse the audience in the performance.

The Challenge

Teeth 'n' Smiles

The effects for Teeth ‘n’ Smiles needed to feel authentic and natural within the context of a live band performance. Controlled effects needed to look uncontrolled, and that was the challenge for us!

Flame effects, in particular, can often appear mechanical or uniform at times, so it was important that these looked organic and realistic. This required careful adjustment, including varying flame heights to avoid repetition.

As is common in theatre productions, the creative brief developed further after the initial install and required much larger flames. Initially, Production Management thought an entirely new flame system would be required. However, the equipment we supplied was designed with adaptability in mind, allowing us to meet the updated requirements without additional hardware.

The team wanted taller flames for the key scene, and thanks to our system’s flexibility, this was easily achieved. We were able to guide the technicians remotely, simply re-calibrating and adjusting the flame controllers to extend the height of the fire. This quick adaptation ensured the production remained on schedule and the scene retained its intended impact, demonstrating both the reliability and versatility of the systems we provide.

The Solution

Luminous supplied a range of theatrical smoke, wind, and flame effects, including:

  • 6 x 1m Flame Trough
  • 1 x Propane Distribution System
  • 1 x Flame Controller, E-Stop, and Hold-to-Run Device
  • 1 x Propane Monitoring & Alarm System
  • 2 x Look Solutions Viper 2.6 Fog Machines
  • 2 x AF3 Fans
  • 1 x Look Solutions Cobra Fog Machine
  • 1 x Smoke Distribution System
  •

Together, these elements created a ‘Wall of Fire’ positioned in front of the upstage scenic arches, combined with a smoke distribution system integrated into the stage. Smoke was released along the full length of the flame to enhance the visual impact, while varied flame heights helped achieve a more natural and less uniform appearance for the fire. This sequence was further enhanced with fast-dissipating smoke blown in from both wings, creating an intense, immersive stage environment.

Luminous also supplied smoke fluid and propane cylinders as part of our Gas Management Service.
