Romeo a Juliet reimagines Shakespeare’s iconic tragedy in bilingual Wales, where the Montagues’ Welsh and the Capulets’ English collide. Directed by Steffan Donnelly, this bold production explores Welsh identity and offers a fresh perspective on the timeless story of love, conflict, and fate.

For the show’s pivotal fight scene, the creative team wanted to heighten the emotional and visual intensity through the use of real rain on stage. The effect needed to feel raw and dramatic while remaining safe and practical for touring venues. With a tight production schedule and multiple locations, they required a rain system that was quick to install and simple to operate. That’s where Luminous came in!

Luminous supplied the HYDRA-STORM Rain Machine, our high-performance modular rain system designed for stage and touring environments. Working closely with the technical team at Theatr Cymru, we tailored the setup to fit the theatre’s stage layout and provided support during the rental.

HYDRA-STORM’s modularity was particularly valuable for this production, with 1-metre units that could be linked together to create continuous rainfall exactly where it was needed. The system’s precision control allowed the rain to appear and fade on cue, perfectly timed to heighten the tension of the scene.

The result was a striking and memorable stage moment that drew the audience deeper into the story. The rainfall added emotional depth to the iconic family conflict, helping transform Romeo a Juliet into an unforgettable live experience.

"The 4 units we had were incredibly easy to set up. Using the hoses and power/data looms provided the units were rigged in minutes. The indication lights on the units were great when refilling for each show. Once we had made a DMX profile for the units, they were very intuitive to program, changing each setting in advance w/mask mode to get the desired look we wanted, using mask mode when the units were in different positions on tour. The units were very reliable. We were very precise in what we programmed and the units delivered the effect consistently across multiple venues. The units are robust and perfect for touring allowing for a big effect with minimal maintenance. [...] The flexibility of advance mode allowed us to offer multiple stages of rain, giving a realistic and then exaggerated look to enhance the action on stage. The precise controls allowed the team to refine these states and build a spectacular looking end product. We received fantastic support from Tom and the team. From site visits to test the effect to onsite over the phone support, we always felt like the team were within arms reach with the support we needed."
