The King’s Awards for Enterprise is an awards programme for British businesses and organisations. It is recognised as the highest official UK award for business excellence. The awards were previously known as The Queen’s Award for Enterprise and have been running annually since 1966.

Receiving this award for Innovation is a significant milestone for our business and reflects the long-term development and engineering behind our flame systems.

HYDRA-TECH vs HYDRA-STORM: What’s the Difference?

We’re often asked about the difference between our rain systems, HYDRA-TECH and HYDRA-STORM. While both are designed to deliver striking water effects, they serve very different creative and practical purposes. Choosing the right one depends entirely on what you want your rain to do.

Put simply, HYDRA-TECH offers advanced creative control, including the ability to create custom graphics using water, whereas HYDRA-STORM is designed for producing consistent, controllable rainfall with ease.

Both systems are modular, with each rain head measuring approximately one metre. Multiple heads can be joined together to suit stages of any size. HYDRA-TECH and HYDRA-STORM also share the same droplet size and nozzle spacing, allowing them to be used together seamlessly on stage.

HYDRA-TECH Digital Rain System

HYDRA-TECH is our advanced digital rain system, engineered for projects where water becomes part of the storytelling, offering full creative control.

It allows you to create graphics, patterns and even text using falling water. Using a dedicated console, users can programme visuals that appear as raindrops, transforming a simple rain curtain into a dynamic display surface. This makes HYDRA-TECH ideal for:

How Our Gas Management Service Works

Behind the scenes, effective gas management keeps theatrical effects running smoothly. Perhaps not the most exciting job when it comes to theatre, but gas supply is essential, powering effects such as fog, moving scenery and flame effects. What seems like a simple task can quickly become complex logistically.

Here’s a step-by-step look at how gas management works.

1. Pre-Production Planning

Gas management needs to happen well before the first audience arrives. This stage involves understanding exactly which effects are required and identifying the types of gas needed. We also calculate the volume required, confirm storage needs, and establish the number of venues on the tour.

In theatres, gas storage can be limited due to fire safety, ventilation and access requirements. Older venues in particular often have very tight space and strict fire strategies, meaning only small quantities can be stored at a time. This makes careful planning essential.

2. Risk Assessment & Compliance

Gases are classed as dangerous goods, so safety and compliance are non-negotiable. We work within each venue’s safety rules and restrictions and ensure all requirements are met. We also provide Gas monitoring and alarm systems to maintain a safe working environment.

Deliveries cannot be carried out by standard drivers. ADR-certified drivers are required to transport dangerous goods safely. Non-compliance can lead to fines, refusal of delivery, or even show stoppage, so it’s very important we make ourselves aware of this.

3. Delivery Coordination

One of the biggest logistical challenges of gas management is coordinating deliveries. This includes organising timely deliveries, confirming access points, delivery windows and unloading requirements for each venue.

Many venues, particularly in central London, can be difficult to access. Height restrictions, security checks and strict loading bay times can all impact delivery. For touring productions, coordinating multiple cities every few weeks makes this stage particularly complex.

4. Show Support

Once the gas is in place, the work continues throughout the run. Gas usage can vary from show to show, and you can’t afford to wait until a cylinder runs out mid-performance. We help to anticipate when replacements will be needed, and manage refills promptly.

We also provide on-call support for any urgent requirements that may arise, such as increased usage, delayed deliveries or changes in venue requirements. Reliable monitoring and fast response ensure the show continues without disruption!

5. Post-Show & Turnaround

For touring productions, the next venue is already waiting, so turnaround must be fast, clean and compliant. Gas management continues after the final performance, with empty cylinders collected, refills scheduled, and inventory updated and documented.

CO2 Awareness and Operator Training

Luminous will introduce CO₂ training for theatre and live event venues as part of our expanding gas management support. We will offer a theory-based CO₂ Safety Awareness course for technical and venue staff, alongside practical on-site Operator Training for those directly connecting and supervising CO₂ equipment.

These sessions are designed to improve hazard awareness, safe handling practices and emergency response procedures within performance environments.

On Wednesday 15^th October, Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal visited Luminous Show Technology in Exeter, demonstrating support for British innovation and celebrating the creativity and expertise of UK engineers and technology specialists.

During her visit, The Princess Royal toured Luminous’ headquarters, meeting engineers and staff, and learning about the company’s cutting-edge work in manufacturing special effects for the entertainment industry.

Her Royal Highness was shown a range of Luminous’ special effects, including the company’s brand-new HYDRA-STORM Rain Machine, as well as spectacular fire and smoke effects. Staff demonstrated how these technologies are used to create unforgettable experiences in live entertainment, touring and theatre productions.

The visit concluded with the unveiling of a plaque commemorating The Princess Royal’s visit, revealed using a kabuki curtain, marking the occasion in true Luminous style.

We’ve just wrapped up an amazing few days at PLASA and we’re still buzzing. The show floor was packed with creativity, big ideas and lots of amazing people. This year’s event felt bigger than ever, from dazzling light shows to jaw-dropping new tech, PLASA once again proved why it’s a must-visit for anyone in the live events and entertainment world. We displayed on our stand the HYDRA-TECH Digital Rain Curtain, SHOCK-WAVE Water Cannon and our newest addition, HYDRA-STORM Rain Machine.

HYDRA-STORM Rain Machine

For us, our biggest highlight was launching HYDRA-STORM Rain Machine and seeing it in action at the show. We loved seeing people’s reactions when they experienced it first-hand. This compact unit is a game-changer for the industry. Designed to be easy to set up, operate, and transport, HYDRA-STORM makes water effects at events simpler than ever.

To top it off, HYDRA-STORM took home a PLASA Award For Innovation! We couldn’t be prouder to see it being recognised, and so soon after launching too. PLASA says, “A new approach to curated rain! It’s a product that makes you smile. The judges felt that this well-engineered technology allows for cost-effective ownership of rain effects for shows.”

Out of 37 nominees, our rain machine was just one of 7 who received an award. Together with LSi, PLASA puts the spotlight on fresh thinking with its Innovation Awards. They’re all about recognising the tech that makes our industry safer, more efficient and more creative.

Outside of our own stand, we were inspired by all the equipment around. It’s clear the industry is pushing boundaries in every direction, and that makes us even more excited for what’s to come.

For years, rain effects on stage have followed the same formula. They either relied on pipes with fixed holes, dripping water in predictable, static lines, or on glorified shower heads. While these systems could produce rain in a basic sense, they were painfully limited: patterns couldn’t easily change, precision was hard to achieve, and creative control was minimal.

For us, that was never going to be the final word in rain FX.

Rethinking What Rain Can Do

At Luminous we’ve always been driven by the question: what if water effects could be as flexible, dynamic and expressive as lighting or sound? We wanted a system that could integrate seamlessly into live productions, giving designers the freedom to push creative boundaries without wrestling with bulky, inflexible hardware.

We’ve built some of the most innovative water effects in the industry. From the HYDRA-TECH Digital Rain System that creates graphics in falling water, to the SHOCK-WAVE Water Cannon capable of blasting water over 30 metres. But sometimes, innovation isn’t about pushing complexity further. Sometimes, it’s about fixing a simple, long-standing problem. In this case, how to give productions an easy, controllable, and truly creative way to put rain on stage.

That’s where HYDRA-STORM began.

The Birth of HYDRA-STORM

The goal was simple in theory but ambitious in execution: create a rain effect that was compact, accessible in price, and simple to operate, without compromising on impact. We wanted something that could be rigged quickly, adjusted instantly, and controlled with the same tools that designers already use every day.

HYDRA-STORM delivers exactly that. It runs entirely via standard DMX control, meaning the rain’s intensity can be adjusted with precision in real-time, perfectly in sync with the rest of the show. Need a gentle drizzle for a delicate scene? Easy. Want to ramp it up to a powerful downpour for a dramatic moment? Just as simple. Our engineers have developed a finely tuned algorithm that simulates the randomised droplets of natural rain, far beyond the simplicity of a regular shower head and all can be adjusted live and seamlessly.

We’re thrilled to share that LUMINOUS has been honoured with a Made in the UK, Sold to the World award. It’s a recognition from the Department For Business and Trade that celebrates British businesses making a global impact. We’re so proud to be apart of the 12 winners from across the UK.

LUMINOUS has been recognised in the ‘Creative Industries’ category. From day one, our mission has been clear – to create world-class special effects that inspire and elevate experiences. Whether it’s immersive rain displays, technical theatre effects, or towering water cannons, every LUMINOUS innovation is designed, developed and manufactured right here in the UK. To have our export success and creative impact acknowledged on a national stage is a huge moment for our team.

To mark the occasion, our co-founders Mike and Ed were invited to the Houses of Parliament, where they accepted the award from Gareth Thomas MP. As Ed puts it, “For SMEs like ours, exporting British-made innovation isn’t just a source of pride – it’s a core driver of our company’s growth.”

This award not only highlights our contribution to international trade, but it also reflects the power of collaboration. Our work wouldn’t be possible without the brilliant clients, designers, and technicians across the world who trust us to help bring their boldest ideas to life. From festivals in the Middle East to theatre productions spanning 3 continents, LUMINOUS effects are making waves far beyond UK borders.

It’s an exciting time at LUMINOUS, with more international projects on the horizon and new technologies on the way.
