For Beetlejuice, Luminous delivered a wide range of integrated special effects, all discreetly built into the scenery. These included pyrotechnic sparks, streamers, confetti effects, and handheld devices used by performers.

To enhance the chaotic and supernatural tone of the show, we also supplied a variety of atmospheric effects. These ranged from smoking chimneys and a simulated flame fireplace to ‘Neitherworld’ portals that emit fog and light as they appear on stage.

All systems were designed to function within moving scenery, whether flown or tracked on and off stage. Depending on the application, units were powered by onboard batteries and controlled via DMX or dedicated wireless pyro systems.

Some of the smaller devices were even integrated into costumes, with concealed ducting allowing performers to safely trigger effects themselves during the show.

The bespoke flame systems brought the climactic fire scene to life, creating the drama and tension of a theatre burning on stage. With multiple levels, revolving stages, balconies, and wheeled scenic props, this sequence was a complex setup and integration. Along with the additional smoke machines, wind machines and low fog we provided, each effect was carefully positioned and timed to work seamlessly with the choreography and scenic elements, delivering an bold performance while ensuring complete safety for cast, crew, and audience.

Luminous also supplied a Circus Flame Ring, allowing a performer to safely jump through a controlled ring of fire. Carefully integrated with the choreography and timing of the scene, it created a memorable moment while meeting all safety and technical requirements.

To manage the complexity of the setup safely, all flame effects were fed through a central Gas Distribution Wall Panel. This system allowed precise control of gas delivery to each effect, with integrated gas detection, emergency stops, and wireless switching interfaces. By centralising control, the production team could operate multiple flame effects across the stage reliably, while maintaining full safety compliance and quick response in case of any issue.

Luminous supplied a range of theatrical smoke, wind, and flame effects, including:

Together, these elements created a ‘Wall of Fire’ positioned in front of the upstage scenic arches, combined with a smoke distribution system integrated into the stage. Smoke was released along the full length of the flame to enhance the visual impact, while varied flame heights helped achieve a more natural and less uniform appearance for the fire. This sequence was further enhanced with fast-dissipating smoke blown in from both wings, creating an intense, immersive stage environment.

Luminous also supplied smoke fluid and propane cylinders as part of our Gas Management Service.

To bring the creative vision of Paddington The Musical to life, Luminous designed, supplied, and installed a fully integrated special effects system tailored to the production’s needs. Our installation included:

• 2 × High-Pressure Mist Pumps
• 8 × Misting Jets
• 6 × Water Jets
• 3 × DMX Switch Packs
• Associated water and control distribution systems

This equipment was used for an iconic scene in Paddington’s story, involving a bathtub and a very wet bear! The sequence begins with mist jets discreetly integrated into decorative copper pipework on the set, giving the illusion that water is venting from them. When the bathtub bursts through the ceiling, all effects trigger simultaneously, with water jets squirting over the audience. Two jets were originally aimed at Mr Brown, though that element was later taken out as he was getting a little too wet.

A key innovation of our solution was the development of a multipurpose mounting bracket, which allowed any jet to be installed quickly and enabled easy adjustment of the firing angle. This flexibility proved invaluable during technical rehearsals, allowing the creative team to focus and refine each effect efficiently.

Each misting jet was equipped with a filtered input and a serviceable nozzle on the output, ensuring consistent, particle-free performance throughout the run. The high-pressure pump systems were built with multiple layers of safety and control, including pressure relief valves, water supply solenoids, and manual lever valves, enabling easy shut-off when required. The water supply itself was protected by triple-cartridge filtration to maintain purity and reliability, something that’s very necessary for 8 shows every week!

All equipment was fully controllable via DMX switch boxes, which included integrated safety channels to minimise the risk of misfires and ensure reliable operation during performances.

As with all of our theatre installations, we provided a comprehensive documentation pack for the production’s technical team. This included 3D drawings, detailed risk assessments, and user manuals for all installed equipment, giving the crew complete confidence in operating and maintaining the effects safely.

Luminous engineered a series of bespoke SFX systems for the production:

• Tree Truss Flame System – A 10m linear flame bar built into a flying truss for dramatic overhead fire effects.

• TV Studio Flame System – Integrated into wheeled scenic staging, creating a ring of fire.

• Tribute Camp Fire – Entirely wireless and self-contained, allowing it to be moved freely around the stage.

• Chariot Exhaust Flames – Fired horizontally from flown Chariots, synchronised with movement across the stage.

• Wireless Control & Secondary Wired Safety Enable System – Allowed full automation and precise control of all flame effects.

• Low Fog System with Automated Pop-Ups

Every element was designed to be safe and reliable, providing the production team with maximum flexibility for rehearsals and live performances. Luminous’ flame and atmospheric systems enhanced pivotal moments on stage. From the fiery reveal of Katniss’ dress to the immersive environment of the Tribute Camp and the chariot sequences, the effects delivered cinematic impact, reliability, and safety, setting a new benchmark for live theatre SFX.
