Luminous Show Technology are hugely proud to announce that we are recipients for The King’s Award for Enterprise 2026, in the category of Innovation.

This recognition celebrates our continued commitment to developing special effects technology for the live entertainment industry, with particular acknowledgement of our innovative flame systems.

Innovation at Luminous

At Luminous, innovation has always been at the core of what we do. Our flame systems are a key example of this, combining advanced engineering, precision control, and robust safety design to deliver reliable performance in the most demanding environments.

These systems are trusted and used worldwide, including major productions such as Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, The Hunger Games: On Stage, and The Greatest Showman, where precision, safety, and repeatability are essential night after night in long-running productions.

We are also proud to be the original manufacturer behind a number of leading industry products from MAGIC FX, helping to bring flame effects to stages and major events across the globe. Luminous has collaborated with MAGIC FX for over half a decade, developing and manufacturing flame technology for their product range, including the Flameblazer, Flameblazer Head, Flameblazer 5-Way, Hellfire, Firestorm, External Fill Pump, and Liquid Flame Pump Station.

What Is The King’s Award for Enterprise?

The King’s Awards for Enterprise is an awards programme for British businesses and organisations. It is recognised as the highest official UK award for business excellence. The awards were previously known as The Queen’s Award for Enterprise and have been running annually since 1966.

Receiving this award for Innovation is a significant milestone for our business and reflects the long-term development and engineering behind our flame systems.

This latest achievement follows our previous success in 2024, when Luminous Show Technology received The King’s Award for Enterprise in the International Trade category.

That award recognised our rapid and sustained growth in overseas markets, and the global demand for our special effects technologies across live events, touring productions, and themed entertainment installations.

Together, these awards highlight both the international reach of our products and the innovation that drives them forward.

A Royal Reception

On Wednesday 8th July, our cofounder Ed was invited to attend The King’s Awards for Enterprise Reception at St James’s Palace.

During the reception, he had the honour of speaking with His Majesty The King, as well as catching up with HRH The Princess Royal, who visited our Exeter headquarters last year, and meeting Prince Richard, Duke of Gloucester. It was a pleasure to see the Lord Lieutenant of Devon, David Fursdon, and celebrate alongside the other Devon recipients in recognition of their achievements.

This year marks eight incredible years of creating show-stopping special effects at Luminous. What started as a small idea between two SFX professionals has grown into a company trusted by theatres, live productions, and attractions across the world. Over the past eight years, we’ve engineered, built, and delivered effects that have transformed countless shows and experiences.

To celebrate our journey, we’re sharing 8 things you may not know about us, a little look behind-the-scenes at what makes Luminous unique.

All design, engineering and manufacturing happens in our UK workshop

Everything we do begins and ends in our UK workshop. Every concept, prototype, and finished system is designed, engineered, and built by our own team. Keeping everything under one roof means we maintain full control over quality and innovation. This hands-on approach allows our engineers to experiment, refine, and continuously improve, ensuring that every product bearing the Luminous name meets the highest standards of performance and reliability.

Our ethos is all about Engineering Emotion

Over the years, we’ve developed a signature range of special effects equipment that has become a cornerstone of the Luminous identity. The HYDRA-STORM Rain Machine, HYDRA-TECH Digital Rain Curtain, SHOCK-WAVE Water Cannon, and SMOKE-TECH Cryo Curtain each serve a unique purpose, and yet all share the same DNA of precision engineering, reliability, and impact. These systems have been used in everything from touring theatre productions to large-scale outdoor events, helping creators achieve amazing moments.

Experience that goes beyond our years

While Luminous may be celebrating its eighth anniversary, the experience behind it stretches much further. Co-founders Mike and Ed have spent decades in the world of special effects, with Mike working on blockbuster films such as Inception, Quantum of Solace and The Dark Knight, and Ed playing a key role in Olympic Ceremonies in London, Sochi and Rio. Along with our team of engineers, their combined knowledge shapes every decision we make, from design principles to safety standards.

Collaborations that fire creativity

Collaboration is at the heart of everything we do. We’re proud to work alongside some of the most respected names in the industry, including MagicFX, for whom we engineer and manufacture a range of their iconic flame systems. These partnerships allow us to merge engineering precision with creative ambition, resulting in effects that are not only reliable but truly unforgettable.

This year, we have worked on some incredible projects, including theatre productions such as Paddington The Musical and The Hunger Games On Stage. A Royal Visit: HRH The Princess Royal Visits Luminous

On Wednesday 15^th October, Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal visited Luminous Show Technology in Exeter, demonstrating support for British innovation and celebrating the creativity and expertise of UK engineers and technology specialists.

During her visit, The Princess Royal toured Luminous’ headquarters, meeting engineers and staff, and learning about the company’s cutting-edge work in manufacturing special effects for the entertainment industry.

Showcasing Innovation

Her Royal Highness was shown a range of Luminous’ special effects, including the company’s brand-new HYDRA-STORM Rain Machine, as well as spectacular fire and smoke effects. Staff demonstrated how these technologies are used to create unforgettable experiences in live entertainment, touring and theatre productions.

Commemorating the Visit

The visit concluded with the unveiling of a plaque commemorating The Princess Royal’s visit, revealed using a kabuki curtain, marking the occasion in true Luminous style.

PLASA Show 2025

We’ve just wrapped up an amazing few days at PLASA and we’re still buzzing. The show floor was packed with creativity, big ideas and lots of amazing people. This year’s event felt bigger than ever, from dazzling light shows to jaw-dropping new tech, PLASA once again proved why it’s a must-visit for anyone in the live events and entertainment world. We displayed on our stand the HYDRA-TECH Digital Rain Curtain, SHOCK-WAVE Water Cannon and our newest addition, HYDRA-STORM Rain Machine.

HYDRA-STORM Rain Machine

For us, our biggest highlight was launching HYDRA-STORM Rain Machine and seeing it in action at the show. We loved seeing people’s reactions when they experienced it first-hand. This compact unit is a game-changer for the industry. Designed to be easy to set up, operate, and transport, HYDRA-STORM makes water effects at events simpler than ever.

To top it off, HYDRA-STORM took home a PLASA Award For Innovation! We couldn’t be prouder to see it being recognised, and so soon after launching too. PLASA says, “A new approach to curated rain! It’s a product that makes you smile. The judges felt that this well-engineered technology allows for cost-effective ownership of rain effects for shows.”

Out of 37 nominees, our rain machine was just one of 7 who received an award. Together with LSi, PLASA puts the spotlight on fresh thinking with its Innovation Awards. They’re all about recognising the tech that makes our industry safer, more efficient and more creative.

A Big Thank You

Outside of our own stand, we were inspired by all the equipment around. It’s clear the industry is pushing boundaries in every direction, and that makes us even more excited for what’s to come.

A huge thank you to everyone who came by to say hello, whether you stopped for a quick chat, a demo, or just a curious glance; we really appreciated it. These shows aren’t just about tech, they’re about community, and PLASA reminded us how strong and supportive ours really is.

Whether it’s immersive rain displays, technical theatre effects, or towering water cannons, every LUMINOUS innovation is designed, developed and manufactured right here in the UK. To have our export success and creative impact acknowledged on a national stage is a huge moment for our team.

To mark the occasion, our co-founders Mike and Ed were invited to the Houses of Parliament, where they accepted the award from Gareth Thomas MP. As Ed puts it, “For SMEs like ours, exporting British-made innovation isn’t just a source of pride – it’s a core driver of our company’s growth.”

This award not only highlights our contribution to international trade, but it also reflects the power of collaboration. Our work wouldn’t be possible without the brilliant clients, designers, and technicians across the world who trust us to help bring their boldest ideas to life. The King’s Award For Enterprise

In 2024, LUMINOUS received our most prestigious honour yet. We won The King’s Awards for Enterprise in the category ‘International Trade’. These awards are the highest representation of outstanding achievement in business, rewarding companies that demonstrate excellence in their fields.

About The Award

The King’s Awards for Enterprise is an awards programme for British businesses and organisations. It is recognised as the highest official UK award for business excellence. The awards were previously established as The Queen’s Award for Enterprise, and they have been running every year since 1966.

The awards are given to numerous companies that excel in the four categories of ‘International Trade’, ‘Innovation’, ‘Sustainable Development’ and ‘Promoting Opportunity (Through Social Mobility)’. There’s a panel of judges who ensure that each applicating company is deserving of this prestigious award.

International Trade

LUMINOUS received this award for our contribution to International Trade. This category focusses on businesses who prove significant and sustainable increase in overseas earnings relative to their size and sector. At LUMINOUS, we have made continuing relationships with businesses all over the world. Our team has manufactured hardware in places such as Saudi Arabia for Terhal by Dragone, North America for the Harry Potter & The Cursed Child theatre shows, and right here in the UK for the Commonwealth Games.

Upon receiving the award, our co-founder Mike Badley said, “We have had a long-standing in the West End and have helped the productions practise their magic ever since. We specialise arrangement with Hogwarts since the first theatre production of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child opened in moments that people don’t forget. Behind this is an awful lot of clever tech and we are so proud of our brilliant team for the work they deliver. This award is a fantastic recognition of the dedication and innovation they bring to their work every day. Every day the team work hard with creativity, and passion to propel us to new heights in the world of special effects engineering.”

A Royal Reception

LUMINOUS were kindly invited to The King’s Awards Reception in July 2024. The evening was hosted at Windsor Castle, and it was chance to mix with other award winners and even some royals. These awards recognise many exciting and innovative businesses throughout the UK, and the reception was a great opportunity to celebrate these successes and connect with them personally.

Mike attended the reception, where he had the privilege of networking with other inspiring business leaders and being introduced to King Charles III himself.

Awards Presentation

In January 2025, we celebrated receiving the award at a special presentation held at our Exeter headquarters.

We were delighted to welcome:

His Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant of Devon, David Fursdon, who presented the award.
The Lord Mayor of Exeter, Councillor Kevin Mitchell, and his consort.
The High Sheriff of Devon, Commodore Jake Moores OBE DL RN.
A Lord-Lieutenant Cadet.

The day was a highlight in the history of LUMINOUS, shared with colleagues, friends, and distinguished guests. The trophy, made by The Workshop Aberfeldy, is made from wood and created with sustainability in mind. In addition to the award, LUMINOUS also received the Grant of Appointment signed by His Majesty the King.

During the event, we gave our guests a tour of our facilities. We introduced them to just some of the SFX machines we make in our workshop. As well as that, we demonstrated the extraordinary capabilities of the HYDRA-TECH Digital Rain Curtain. The machine has been used in events across the world, so it was very well-received by our visitors.

Mike Awarded Mechanical Engineering Fellowship

We are thrilled to announce that one of our co-founders, Mike, has been awarded a prestigious fellowship by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE)! This honour represents the peak of professional recognition within the engineering community, a testament to Mike’s exceptional work in the field.

A Brief History

Mike’s journey in engineering began under the mentorship of the legendary Chris Corbould OBE, where he honed his skills in creating cutting-edge special effects for blockbuster movies such as Inception, Quantum of Solace and The Dark Knight. These early experiences laid the foundation for his innovation at LUMINOUS.

Working in film special effects has allowed Mike to quickly adapt and find solutions in a fast-paced, ever-changing environment. This dynamic industry requires concepts to be created, and equipment engineered at lightning speed. Adjustments are common along the way as projects evolve, and they must be responded to quickly. Unlike the long development cycles typical in traditional SFX engineering, the demands of film have shaped Mike’s ability to respond quickly and resourcefully to engineering queries.

Today, Mike leads our talented engineering team alongside Ed, transforming ambitious concepts into realities. From tackling complex special effects challenges in projects, to developing our product range, his expertise helps to ensure our work remains at the forefront of the industry.

This recognition by IMechE reflects not just Mike’s dedication and skill, but also the collaborative spirit that defines our team. Every project we undertake is infused with the same passion for engineering that has driven Mike’s career to such extraordinary heights.

Celebrating 7 Years of LUMINOUS

This week, we celebrate the 7th anniversary of LUMINOUS Show Technology! Join us as we look back at our journey of innovation, growth, and milestones. Here’s a snapshot of our path, from our founding in 2017 to the remarkable achievements of 2024.

2017: The Beginning

LUMINOUS was launched in late 2017, founded by Ed and Mike, both seasoned experts in event production. They saw an opportunity to bring some seriously cool effects to the industry. That first year, LUMINOUS made a bold entrance, providing some special effects (SFX) for Harry Potter and the Cursed Child in New York which officially opened the following year.

2018: Expanding Horizons

In 2018, LUMINOUS took on exciting new projects. We powered up Ozzy Osbourne’s performance at Download Festival and designed custom effects for The Phantom of the Opera: Pearl UK tour. We also brought our SFX expertise to the Harry Potter theatre show again, which officially opened the following year in Melbourne.

It was this year that LUMINOUS developed our very own range of flame effects. This included the Stadium Flame, Arena Flame, Arena 5, and the Fuel Station. We went on to produce custom flame systems for the likes of Image Engineering and Event FX. LUMINOUS also provided Pyrojunkies with a high-capacity flame system for Westlife at Croke Park!

2019: New Partnerships

2019 was a great year for both our local and global ventures. We were honoured to receive Exeter Living’s Creative Company of the Year award and we moved to our current headquarters in Sowton, which provided much-needed space for our expanding operations. Highlights from 2019 also included beginning SFX installations for Harry Potter and the Cursed Child in Hamburg and San Francisco, along with a huge project for The VOID VR experience.

This year, we also formed a very important partnership with Magic FX. The team approached us to co-design and manufacture their liquid flames, a collaboration that continues to thrive!

2020: Rising to the Challenge

The pandemic brought unique challenges, but we adapted quickly. Responding to a call to arms from the UK government, we pivoted to produce hand sanitisers and face shields, supporting the nation’s PPE supply. LUMINOUS quickly became one of the primary suppliers of sanitiser to the Royal Devon and Exeter hospital. We were able to produce these by using chemicals that were originally used in our flame systems. LUMINOUS modified our HYDRA-TECH rain system to fill the bottles quickly and efficiently with sanitiser! We also developed sanitiser solutions such as dispensers for the likes of London’s Science Museum, Kensington Palace, and the Hurlingham Club, amongst many other high-profile event locations.

With aid from the government’s Culture Recovery Fund for the entertainment industry, we remained resilient and prepared for the industry’s revival.

2021: New Ventures

In 2021, we joined Experience UK, highlighting our FX expertise for themed entertainment. The team was invited to Saudi Arabia alongside the association on a trade delegation to visit the Qiddiya project, an upcoming mega-experience of attractions, sports, and culture. During the year, we also exhibited our services at the trade show events MAPIC in Cannes and IAAPA in Barcelona.

As well as working on SFX for the Beauty and the Beast UK tour, LUMINOUS brought out some important products. We launched the HYDRA-TECH Digital Rain Curtain, a huge milestone for us that continues to be a cutting-edge piece of equipment for stages worldwide! 2021 was also the year that the Magic FX Flameblazer and FX Arm Controller were created. We spent a lot of time developing and manufacturing these products that remain the top choice for flame SFX today.

In 2021, we also took on a new project, pivoting our skillset towards a different industry and showcasing our technical ability beyond traditional show tech. We collaborated with DeGould, who had just received considerable investment for their car scanning technologies. Our work here involved working with their design team to produce a solution for their advanced lighting and camera systems.

2022: Recognition and Major Projects

LUMINOUS received the Innovate UK Smart grant to develop FXMotion in 2022, which helped us create some crazy effects. Most notably, this was the year we contributed to the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham. This year was a busy one, with our work spanning different continents. Harry Potter and the Cursed Child premiered in both Tokyo and Toronto using our equipment. We also brought our flame effects to the MDL Beast Festival.

2022 was also an important year for product development in our partnership with Magic FX. The Liquid Pump Station, Hell Fire and External Fill Pump were created during this year. The ground-breaking innovation of the Liquid Pump Station is one that continues to provide advanced performance and safety to technicians all across the world.

2023: New Products and Industry Acclaim

In 2023, more products were brought into the industry by LUMINOUS. It was this year we unveiled our versatile SMOKE-TECH Cryo Curtain. In our partnership with Magic FX, we developed the popular Flameblazer Head to accompany their large range of flame effects.

Our SFX equipment was featured in the UK & Ireland Aladdin theatre tour, Terhal by Dragone, and Stranger Things: The First Shadow. What’s more, we supported the Wicked UK & Ireland tour with our gas and fuel management service. FXMotion also achieved 2nd place at the Blooloop Innovation Awards!

2024: Our Biggest Year Yet

2024 has been monumental. Our team has grown, and we proudly received the King’s Award for Enterprise in International Trade. This achievement brought amazing opportunities such as attending a reception at Windsor Castle and Downing Street.

Behind the scenes, we also started to provide gas and fuel management for MJ the Musical, a service that we officially opened up this year.

LUMINOUS is proud to share our experience at the largest business event of the year. We were among a select few invited to the International Investment Summit Entrepreneurs Reception at no. 11 Downing Street. This event brings together key players from around the globe, providing a platform to network, explore new opportunities, and foster relationships that fuel investment.

What is the International Investment Summit?

The UK hosted this prominent event to drive forward the national mission for economic growth. This was the first one under Labour’s new leadership, and the Prime Minister invited global entrepreneurs, investors and innovators. It serves as a catalyst for ground-breaking discussions, fostering partnerships, and igniting new investment opportunities across a variety of industries. The actual summit took place in St Paul’s Cathedral, with guests including King Charles, Gareth Southgate and Sir Elton John.

The Entrepreneurs Reception was held the following day at Downing Street. LUMINOUS had an invitation on behalf of the Chancellor of the Exchequer, the Rt Hon Rachel Reeves MP. This reception hosted some of the UK’s most innovative and successful entrepreneurs alongside leading global investors.

One of our co-founders, Mike Badley, attended the reception at Downing Street during the week. The event was referred to as the ‘after-party for the cool kids’, which set the tone for an eye-opening evening with exciting guests. Mike commented, “There was a huge amount of positivity in the room from the businesses I spoke with and the government, and it was great to be able to provide feedback directly to the decision-makers on the issues that affect growth.”

The reception offered a chance to connect with leading entrepreneurs and organisations, allowing us to learn from the best. Mike engaged in insightful conversations with some big names in business, entrepreneurs and members from of Department for Business and Trade.

Being part of the International Investment Summit helped to showcase our commitment to growth and excellence within the special effects industry. Earlier this year, LUMINOUS was honoured with The King’s Award for International Trade. This invitation further strengthens our global ambitions.
